{"id":10641,"date":"2020-12-01T19:02:37","date_gmt":"2020-12-01T18:02:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.poupadou.com\/blog\/?p=10641"},"modified":"2020-12-02T10:34:26","modified_gmt":"2020-12-02T09:34:26","slug":"various-the-tradition-of-vassilopita-in-greece","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.poupadou.com\/blog\/en\/various-the-tradition-of-vassilopita-in-greece\/","title":{"rendered":"The tradition of the Vassilopita in Greece"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Vassilopita is the must-have New Year cake in Greece which is the equivalent of the galette de rois in France, by putting a &#8220;flouri&#8221; (a coin) wrapped in aluminum foil instead of a bean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vassilopita is made up of two words, the &#8220;pita&#8221; which in this case means cake and the &#8220;Vassilis&#8221; which is &#8220;Aghios Vassilis&#8221; or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Basil_of_Caesarea\">Basil of Caesarea<\/a> (the equivalent of Santa Claus). In Greece, they celebrate Basil of Caesarea on January 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1018\" height=\"943\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poupadou.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Le-flouri-dans-la-vassilopita-politiki-briochee-la-gateau-de-fin-dannee-en-Grece-1018x943.jpg\" alt=\"Le flouri dans la vassilopita politiki brioch\u00e9e, la g\u00e2teau de fin d'ann\u00e9e en Gr\u00e8ce\" class=\"wp-image-10300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.poupadou.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Le-flouri-dans-la-vassilopita-politiki-briochee-la-gateau-de-fin-dannee-en-Grece-1018x943.jpg 1018w, https:\/\/www.poupadou.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Le-flouri-dans-la-vassilopita-politiki-briochee-la-gateau-de-fin-dannee-en-Grece-679x629.jpg 679w, https:\/\/www.poupadou.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Le-flouri-dans-la-vassilopita-politiki-briochee-la-gateau-de-fin-dannee-en-Grece.jpg 1216w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1018px) 100vw, 1018px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The tradition<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Basil of Caesarea was a bishop of the Orthodox Church in Cappadocia, part of Asia Minor at the time, the 4th century who aided those most in need.&nbsp;In fact, the governor of Cappadocia went to occupy Caesarea and Basil the Great asked the inhabitants to collect as much gold as they could in order to deliver it as a &#8220;ransom&#8221; to the conqueror.&nbsp;The delivery never happened either because of a miracle or because the governor regretted it.&nbsp;But the valuables were many and Basil of Caesarea did not know what belonged to whom. In pastry shops and bakeries we can find them from the end of December until at least mid-January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are different recipes for vassilopita depending on the region. In addition, in some areas vassilopita is savory and it looks like meat pie. Then, you cut out as many identical pieces as the people who are present in your house and 5 more pieces. According to tradition, the 5 additional pieces are for Jesus, the Virgin, the poor, the house and Aghios Vassilis.
