{"id":1259,"date":"2018-10-03T15:54:58","date_gmt":"2018-10-03T13:54:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.poupadou.com\/blog\/periohi-kriti\/"},"modified":"2020-05-31T10:15:41","modified_gmt":"2020-05-31T08:15:41","slug":"area-crete","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.poupadou.com\/blog\/en\/area-crete\/","title":{"rendered":"Crete"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span>Crete (modern Greek: \u039a\u03c1\u03ae\u03c4\u03b7) is the largest island in Greece, and one of the largest in the Mediterranean.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span>According to mythology, Zeus was born in Crete in a cave on Mount Dict\u00e9 (hence the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poupadou.com\/fr\/oinotropous\/dictame-de-crete-15g-81\">dictum<\/a> took his name), protected by his mother Rhea against the appetite of his father, Chronos. Important place for the loves of Zeus, it is also in Crete that it brought back Europe (hence the name of the continent) under the aspect of a bull. From their love was born Minoas, the legendary king of Crete.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-1010\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poupadou.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Palais-de-Knossos-Cr\u00e8te-1024x689.jpg\" alt=\"Knossos palace, Heraklion, Crete\" class=\"wp-image-4048\"\/><figcaption>Knossos palace, Heraklion, Crete<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span>Crete is also the cradle of the Minoan civilization, Knossos being the most famous archaeological site of the island. It is also home to different species such as Caretta-Caretta turtles, dolphins, Mediterranean seals and eagles.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-1001\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poupadou.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Loutro-village-en-Cr\u00e8te-1024x684.jpg\" alt=\"Loutro village in Crete\" class=\"wp-image-4040\"\/><figcaption>Loutro village in Crete<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span>The inhabitants of the island speak a dialect (Cretan) and are often dressed in black shirts. The culture is remarkable on this island, even in the daily life with the mantinades (improvised poems), the Cretan lyre (musical instrument) and the traditional dances.
