{"id":7141,"date":"2019-10-28T14:38:31","date_gmt":"2019-10-28T13:38:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.poupadou.com\/blog\/athena-international-olive-oil-competition\/"},"modified":"2020-05-31T10:10:55","modified_gmt":"2020-05-31T08:10:55","slug":"athena-international-olive-oil-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.poupadou.com\/blog\/en\/athena-international-olive-oil-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Athena International Olive Oil Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Held annually in Greece, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.athenaoliveoil.gr\/en\/\">ATHENA International Olive Oil Competition<\/a> highlights the importance of competition in the ancestral homeland of the olive tree and the cradle of noble competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, this historic country, where myths and legends of the past are constantly mixed with challenges and modern achievements, is the third world producer of olive oil &#8211; the first producer of extra virgin olive oil &#8211; and is ahead by far per capita consumption, followed by Spain, Italy and Portugal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poupadou.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ATHENA-International-Olive-Oil-Competition-d\u00e9gustation-\u00e0-laveugle-1024x681.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6651\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The tasting is blind, with a panel of handpicked judges who are all recognised experts for several years and accredited by the IOC (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationaloliveoil.org\">International Olive Council<\/a>). At least 2\/3 of the judges come from different countries from Greece, so that the vote is indisputable and reflects the tastes of the whole world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The competition begins in the morning, and each judge can only test a maximum of 35 samples per day. The samples are served in opaque blue anonymized glasses, all of which have been certified by IOC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.poupadou.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ATHENA-International-Olive-Oil-Competition-verres-\u00e0-d\u00e9gustation-1024x681.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6659\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2016, two olive oils from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poupadou.com\/en\/brand\/39-22-12\">39\/22 brand<\/a> won the silver and bronze medals. The extra virgin olive oil variety &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.poupadou.com\/en\/39-22\/extra-virgin-olive-oil-manaki-3922-500ml-57\">Manaki<\/a>&#8221; won the silver medal and the olive oil &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.poupadou.com\/en\/39-22\/olive-oil-koroneiki-attica-3922-500ml-26\">Koroneiki<\/a>&#8221; won the bronze medal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018, the three olive oils from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poupadou.com\/en\/brand\/39-22-12\">39\/22<\/a> did even better by winning the gold and silver medals.
