Arcadia

Arcadia (Greek: Αρκαδία) is a region located in the center of the Peloponnese. It is mountainous to the north and bathed to the east by the Aegean archipelago. Its capital is Tripoli, and Megalopoli, Astros, Levidi, Leonidio and Tyros are the other big cities. Arcadia also has picturesque villages like Dimitsana and Vytina.

Tripoli was founded in the 14th century and played an important role especially during the Greek War of Independence against the Ottomans. It had different occupants, like the whole region of Peloponnese, like Venetians and Ottomans. In Tripoli you can visit the War Museum, the Matzouneios Library which is public, the Cultural Center and the Archaeological Museum. The building of the Archaeological Museum has been designated by the famous architect Ernst Ziller.

Every village in Arcadia has a long history over the years. The houses are built of stone and their tiled roofs. In Dimitsana you can visit the Library and the Hydraulic Power Museum, in Stemnitsa the Roílos Tower and the 15th century churches. In Karytaina, the fortress is known as the “Greek Toledo” is one of the most important in the region of Peloponnese. If you like sports and rafting, you can try doing at the Lousios River.

The economy of this region is based on agriculture and livestock. It produces potatoes, fruits (cherries, pears, apples, cherries), Mainalo mountain fir honey, wine, tsipouro, legumes, nuts and almonds. On the other hand, some villages (Dimitsana, Stemnitsa) have tourism resources especially during the winter.
